Upon arrival in Bhutan via Druk Air or Bhutan Airlines, enjoy the breathtaking views of the Himalayan range, whether flying in from Kathmandu or Kolkata. After completing airport formalities, embark on a scenic two-hour drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital.

At Kuenselphodrang, the grand statue of Buddha Dordenma sits majestically, overlooking Thimphu Valley. The Motithang Takin Preserve
It was established in the early 1970s and was created to protect the takin, Bhutan’s national animal. This fascinating creature, native to the Eastern Himalayas, has a distinctive appearance with the body of a goat and the head of a cow. Located near Thimphu, the preserve offers visitors a chance to see this rare mammal in a natural setting, contributing to conservation efforts while showcasing Bhutan’s commitment to preserving its unique wildlife.
Tashichho Dzong
Built in the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, Tashichho Dzong has served as a fortress, religious centre, and administrative hub. Renovated in the 1960s, it now houses the King’s throne room, government offices, and the summer residence of the Chief Abbot. This iconic landmark also hosts the annual Thimphu Tsechu festival, embodying Bhutan’s cultural and spiritual essence.
Memorial Chorten in Thimphu
Built in 1974, honors Bhutan's third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, known as the father of modern Bhutan. Punakha, located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, served as Bhutan’s capital until 1955. It is historically significant as the site where Ugyen Wangchuck, Bhutan’s first king, was crowned in 1907. The Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, has been a key religious and administrative centre. It also hosted Bhutan’s first national assembly in 1953 and remains the winter residence of the central monastic body.

Dochula Pass
Situated at an elevation of 3,100 meters (10,200 feet), Dochula Pass is a prominent mountain pass on the road connecting Thimphu and Punakha. The pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan Mountain range, with clear days revealing snow-capped peaks that stretch across the horizon.
Druk Wangyel Chorten
Located at Dochula Pass, the Druk Wangyel Chorten is a significant landmark in Bhutan, built by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, to commemorate Bhutan’s victory in the 2003 military conflict. The chorten, or stupa, is an architectural marvel, featuring a series of 108 stupas symbolizing peace and victory. Lamperi Botanical Garden (3,100 meters / 10,170 feet)
Located near the Dochula Pass, Lamperi Botanical Garden is Bhutan's first botanical park and an important centre for the conservation of the country’s unique plant species. The garden is dedicated to preserving Bhutan's rich botanical diversity and offers a range of flora from temperate and subtropical zones, many of which are found only in this region of the world. It serves not only as a research and conservation centre but also as a peaceful and educational destination for visitors, showcasing the beauty and ecological importance of Bhutan's plant life. The backdrop of the garden is the scenic Dochula Pass, enhancing the experience with panoramic views of the Himalayas.
Chimi LhakhangOften referred to as the "Fertility Temple," Chimi Lhakhang is a revered pilgrimage site for couples seeking children. The temple is located on a hilltop, requiring a scenic hike through lush rice fields to reach it. This sacred site is associated with Drukpa Kuenley, a renowned Buddhist saint known for his unconventional methods of teaching. Along the way, visitors may notice phallic symbols painted on houses and walls, which represent fertility and the subjugation of evil spirits. The temple’s spiritual significance and the scenic hike make it a unique and memorable experience for those who visit.

Travel to Trongsa, a town steeped in Bhutanese history and culture. Its name, meaning "new village," originates from the settlement established by Lama Ngagi Wangchuk in 1543 after he built a meditation centre. Trongsa’s central location made it a strategic site for governance, and it became the seat of the Wangchuck dynasty, rulers of Bhutan since 1907.

Trongsa Dzong: Built-in 1648, this imposing fortress is a masterpiece of Bhutanese architecture and a symbol of power. Jakar Valley, Altitude: 2,600m–4,500m / 8,530ft–14,765ft)
Morning
Start the day with a visit to Ta Dzong, a five-story watchtower built in 1652 by Chogyal Minjur Tempa. Now a museum, it showcases 224 artifacts, including sacred relics, ancient texts, and exquisite sculptures. The main temple is dedicated to Maitreya Buddha, and the structure honours the Wangchuck dynasty's legacy.
Drive to Bumthang
Known for its scenic valleys—Tang, Ura, Choekhor, and Chumey—Bumthang is a spiritual hub rich in legends and the birthplace of the revered Buddhist teacher Pema Lingpa.Jambay Lhakhang
Built in the 7th century by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo, this ancient monastery is one of 108 constructed to subdue evil spirits.
Kurje Lhakhang
A sacred site where Guru Rinpoche meditated in the 8th century. The complex includes three temples, the oldest containing an imprint of Guru Rinpoche's body.
Tamshing Lhakhang
Founded in 1501 by Terton Pema Lingpa, this temple is adorned with ancient paintings, including 1,000 Buddhas and 21 Taras.
Jakar Dzong
Built in 1549, this fortress monastery served as a stronghold during the establishment of Bhutan's central authority.
Konchogsum Lhakhang
Dating to the 6th century, this temple is famed for its bell, once audible as far as Lhasa.
Tang Valley
Known for its rugged beauty, the valley is home to sheep and yak farming due to its less fertile soil. Explore the birthplace of Terton Pema Lingpa and discover its spiritual landmarks.
Membartsho (The Burning Lake)
A revered pilgrimage site where Pema Lingpa discovered Guru Rinpoche's treasures. The lake is adorned with prayer flags and small clay offerings (Tse Tsa).
Ugyenchholing Palace
Now a family museum, this restored 19th-century structure offers insights into the lifestyle of Bhutanese nobility and serves as a retreat for those studying religious history.
Tang Rimochen Lhakhang
A sacred site associated with Guru Rinpoche, featuring tiger-stripe markings and celestial footprints.
Return to Bumthang for an overnight stay.

Morning Drive to Gangtey/Phobjikha Valley
The journey takes you to one of Bhutan’s most scenic destinations. Gangtey surprises travellers with its wide, open landscape, a rarity in Bhutan where valleys are typically narrow and enclosed by dense forests. The drive itself offers stunning views of the surrounding Black Mountains and picturesque countryside.
Gangtey Monastery
Visit Gangtey Gompa, a 17th-century monastery perched atop a hill, offering panoramic views of the valley below. It is the largest Nyingmapa monastery in western Bhutan, deeply spiritual and culturally significant.
Phobjikha Valley
Located at an altitude of 2,900m, this valley is the winter home of black-necked cranes, and majestic birds that migrate here from Tibet each year. The valley’s pristine environment is protected as part of the Black Mountain National Park.
Nakay Chhu and Gay Chhu Rivers
Legend has it that these rivers represent a snake and a boar racing to determine the valley's fate. Since the snake was lost, rice could never be cultivated in Phobjikha, and this tradition holds to this day.

Embark on a scenic hike along the Gangtey Nature Trail, located within Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park. You can either choose to hike through the Crane Conservation Area or take an easier route starting from Gangtey Monastery, with a 45-minute to 1-hour hike.Enjoy the peaceful surroundings as you walk through forests and fields, immersing yourself in the beauty of Gangtey and Phobjekha.

Stop for a traditional meal at a local farmhouse after your hike, where you can experience Bhutanese cuisine and hospitality.
Visit the Crane Information Centre
After lunch, head to the Crane Information Centre to learn about the Black-necked Cranes and their conservation efforts. Watch a short documentary and enjoy birdwatching through telescopes to spot these magnificent creatures in the wild.
Sunset View
End your day with a scenic drive to the southern part of Phobjekha Valley, where you can catch a stunning sunset framed by fluttering prayer flags. Late evening drive towards the south of Phobjekha Valley to get a view of sunset through the prayer flags.

Paro
Travel to the picturesque valley of Paro, renowned for its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and deep-rooted myths. Paro is home to some of Bhutan’s most historic temples and monasteries, including the iconic National Museum and the Paro Rimpung Dzong. The valley is flanked by Mount Chomolhari (7,314m), whose glacial waters form the Pa Chhu (Paro River), adding to the valley's beauty. Paro is also famous for its fertile lands, particularly known for growing the famous red rice. Upon arrival in Paro, you can take some time to explore Paro town in the evening, stroll around its charming streets, visit local shops, or enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) (Altitude: 3,120 meters / 10,240 feet above sea level; approx.. 5-6 hours hike). An iconic and sacred monastery perched dramatically on a cliffside, offering stunning views and spiritual significance. It is one of Bhutan’s most famous landmarks, known for its breathtaking location and historical importance.
If you choose to use horses to ascend towards Taktsang, please note:

Horse Ride Coverage: The horses will take you only up to the viewpoint. Beyond this, you will need to hike for approximately 30 to 45 minutes to reach the monastery.

Descent: The horse ride service is available only for the ascent. On your way back, you will need to descend on foot.
