The Motithang Takin Preserve
It was established in the early 1970s and was created to protect the takin, Bhutan’s national animal. This fascinating creature, native to the Eastern Himalayas, has a distinctive appearance with the body of a goat and the head of a cow. Located near Thimphu, the preserve offers visitors a chance to see this rare mammal in a natural setting, contributing to conservation efforts while showcasing Bhutan’s commitment to preserving its unique wildlife.
Tashichho Dzong
Built in the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, Tashichho Dzong has served as a fortress, religious centre, and administrative hub. Renovated in the 1960s, it now houses the King’s throne room, government offices, and the summer residence of the Chief Abbot. This iconic landmark also hosts the annual Thimphu Tsechu festival, embodying Bhutan’s cultural and spiritual essence.
Memorial Chorten in Thimphu
Built in 1974, honors Bhutan's third king, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, known as the father of modern Bhutan. Punakha, located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, served as Bhutan’s capital until 1955. It is historically significant as the site where Ugyen Wangchuck, Bhutan’s first king, was crowned in 1907. The Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, has been a key religious and administrative centre. It also hosted Bhutan’s first national assembly in 1953 and remains the winter residence of the central monastic body.

Dochula Pass
Situated at an elevation of 3,100 meters (10,200 feet), Dochula Pass is a prominent mountain pass on the road connecting Thimphu and Punakha. The pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayan Mountain range, with clear days revealing snow-capped peaks that stretch across the horizon.
Druk Wangyel Chorten: Located at Dochula Pass, the Druk Wangyel Chorten is a significant landmark in Bhutan, built by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, to commemorate Bhutan’s victory in the 2003 military conflict. The chorten, or stupa, is an architectural marvel, featuring a series of 108 stupas symbolizing peace and victory. Lamperi Botanical Garden (3,100 meters / 10,170 feet)
Located near the Dochula Pass, Lamperi Botanical Garden is Bhutan's first botanical park and an important centre for the conservation of the country’s unique plant species. The garden is dedicated to preserving Bhutan's rich botanical diversity and offers a range of flora from temperate and subtropical zones, many of which are found only in this region of the world. It serves not only as a research and conservation centre but also as a peaceful and educational destination for visitors, showcasing the beauty and ecological importance of Bhutan's plant life. The backdrop of the garden is the scenic Dochula Pass, enhancing the experience with panoramic views of the Himalayas.
Chimi LhakhangOften referred to as the "Fertility Temple," Chimi Lhakhang is a revered pilgrimage site for couples seeking children. The temple is located on a hilltop, requiring a scenic hike through lush rice fields to reach it. This sacred site is associated with Drukpa Kuenley, a renowned Buddhist saint known for his unconventional methods of teaching. Along the way, visitors may notice phallic symbols painted on houses and walls, which represent fertility and the subjugation of evil spirits. Haa Valley (3056 m / 10026 ft)
A hidden gem in Bhutan, a remote and picturesque region made up of five distinct districts. Nestled in the southwest of Paro, it spans 1706 sq. km and is one of the smallest districts in the country. The valley is known for its steep north-south orientation and narrow floor. The name "Haa" signifies its esoteric and secluded nature.

Start early and drive to Haa via the scenic Chele-la Pass, located 4 km from Bondey village. The road to Haa diverges towards the right of the village and ascends through blue pine and rhododendron forests.

After 45 km, reach Chele-la Pass (4200 meters), a vantage point offering breathtaking views of Mount Chomolhari and Jichu Drakey. Take time to walk around and enjoy the stunning scenery.

Continue the journey down to Haa, a 22 km descent through beautiful landscapes.

In Haa, visit the Haa Dzong (currently a military base), offering a picturesque view from the outside. Enjoy a picnic lunch and then visit the Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple) and Lhakhang Nagpo (Black Temple), two famous monasteries in the area.
Chele-la Pass (3810 m / 12500 ft)
Chele-la is one of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan, located at 3988 meters. It offers spectacular views of the sacred mountains, Jomolhari and Jichu Drakey, and is surrounded by a botanical paradise. The pass is famous for its stunning landscapes, adorned with colorful rhododendrons, wild roses, and various alpine flowers. Prayer flags flutter in the wind, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere. The area is a beautiful blend of natural beauty and cultural significance-
Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest)
Get ready for an unforgettable adventure as you embark on a hike to Bhutan’s most iconic site, Taktsang Monastery, also known as the Tiger’s Nest. Perched high on a cliff 900 meters above the Paro Valley, this sacred site is not only a breathtaking architectural marvel but also a place of deep spiritual significance. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew to this very spot on the back of a tigress, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan. The journey up offers stunning views of the surrounding valley, making every step toward this ancient monastery a rewarding experience. The climb may be challenging, but the serene atmosphere and unparalleled views at the top will leave you feeling accomplished and awe-inspired.
Note
If you choose a horse ride for the ascent, it will only cover up to the viewpoint. The rest of the hike (30–45 minutes) and the descent will need to be done on foot.
